Knee Replacement Surgery

In Knee arthritis, the cartilage i.e. smooth surface coating of joint is worn out making it rough and irregular. So the movement and loading of joint is no longer frictionless, smooth and painfree.

Common causes to develop Knee arthritis are Osteoarthritis (Old age related degeneration), Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, previous fracture, Chronic untreated ligament injury etc.

In osteoarthritis, Pain usually starts in one or other knee and eventually in both knees. If neglected it could end up in developing deformity in legs.

This pain is typically present during activities of daily living like difficulty in walking long distances, climbing up/down the stairs, sitting on floor or using Indian toilets etc.

In Joint replacement surgery, we replace these worn out rough surfaces with smooth and frictionless surfaces. At the same time, we correct the deformity of leg so that patient can regain not only the smooth and painfree joint movement but also the normal walking pattern.
